Ceiling Fan Lesson

The ceiling fan I like is a four-blade, classic fan called a "Low-Profile" fan that hugs the ceiling. I think a 42-inch fan would be the maximum size you would need.

I also suggest that instead of the pull chains that come with it that you buy a 3-speed fan control for electrical safety. It is a round dial that clicks only to low, med and hi speeds.

This is the Hunter fan I have in my bedroom (Notice there is no light kit.) I painted it the same color as the ceiling. See how it "disappears"? That is important with 8-foot tall ceilings:

A fan like this dark one below is quite a statement on the ceiling, and visually lowers the ceiling -- a LOT.

Here is a good example of how heavy a fan can look in a room , and the same room with the exact same ceiling fan painted and the pole shortened :

How to paint a ceiling fan:

Unscrew the 8 large screws (2 per blade) that attach the blade to the motor housing. Unscrew the spider arms that attach the paddle to the metal arm. Remove the light kit and install flat plate to cover opening.

Prime the motor housing (even the brass!), the pole, the cap near the ceiling, the spider arm and the paddle with X. I. M. primer in white. You can find this in quart size at Benjamin Moore paint stores. Use a disposable, smooth sponge brush.

Prime one side; let dry. Prime the other side. Sand smooth; wipe with a tack cloth (available at paint and hardware stores).

Paint fan with another new, disposable, smooth sponge brush using latex satin gloss enamel that matches your ceiling paint exactly. Repeat same technique as above. Use two coats if necessary. Do not use flat latex ceiling paint as it is flat paint and will not only look bad but will attract dust and dirt like crazy! Use same color, but in a latex, satin ( or semi-gloss) enamel.

Here is the perfect 42-inch fan for you, which you can paint your ceiling color. Scroll down to bottom to see the 3-speed fan control you mount on the wall.

You will need a special LOW Profile light kit to go with your fan: http://www.hunterfan.com/pages/cat_accessories.php?ModelType=1&CategoryId=lplk
